Saugus Finance Committee Reviews Town Boards and Hall Budgets, Eyes Town Meeting Deadline

Finance Committee · Meeting of April 8, 2026

Saugus Finance Committee reviews town boards and Town Hall budgets as warrant deadline looms. Finance Committee Chair Kenneth DePatto led members through more than a dozen departmental budget pages at the April 8 meeting, with no formal votes taken as the panel builds toward Town Meeting recommendations. The most discussed increase was in veterans services, where a shift from a regional, part-time arrangement shared with Wakefield and Melrose to a full-time, in-house agent drove the budget higher.

A roughly $200,000 professional and technical services line in the legal budget drew questions about whether it was new spending; staff explained it covers labor relations and contract negotiations and had jumped significantly from fiscal year 2025 to fiscal year 2026 before being held level. The committee also noted a salary vacancy in economic development as the town searches for a senior planner, with staff expressing hope of recruiting from communities facing budget cuts. Debt service and employee benefits are on the agenda for April 15.
