Finance Committee approves $1.2 million in supplementary school spending
Finance Committee · Meeting of May 6, 2026
SAUGUS — Finance Committee votes on nine school articles from supplemental reserve fund. The Saugus Finance Committee recommended spending $1.2 million from the Supplemental Student Support Reserve Fund for English-language learner tutoring, athletic study centers, behavioral specialists, and assessment platforms ahead of the May 11 Town Meeting second session. Finance Committee member Steven DiVirgilio opposed nearly all school articles, citing lack of student surveys and sustainability questions about funding new positions from one-time reserves.
Chair Kenneth DePatto expressed concern that the committee not repeat prior instances when teacher contracts were reopened immediately after school budget appropriations were approved. The committee unanimously approved $15.7 million in capital and water infrastructure spending, including $5.765 million for sewer improvements, $4.82 million for lead line replacement, and $2.121 million for water pipeline work.
