Saugus Schools Adopt Handbooks, Privacy Policy
School Committee · Meeting of August 27, 2026
Saugus School Committee opens the year by rushing through a new student privacy policy. Facing a September 1 deadline under the state's new PROTECT Act, members voted unanimously to adopt a Massachusetts Association of School Committees draft policy without the usual review process, calling it compliance with "no choice anyway." The board also approved a $2,201,131.70 bills warrant 5-0 and signed off on revised handbooks for both the middle-high school and elementary schools, including a new ban on AI-generated images of students and staff. Superintendent Hashem presented a four-point district improvement plan built around "grow, belong and learn," while staff detailed new IXL, i-Ready and a grade-3-only Iowa Assessment pilot.
Dr. Scazzarella reported 53 students completed summer coursework, cutting repeaters to just 11 students in grades 9-12. Resident Frank Federico renewed concerns about student drop-offs along Route 1.
