SAUGUS — Saugus raised its West Nile virus risk level to moderate Thursday as Town Manager Scott Crabtree announced the hiring of a new veterans service officer, giving residents two significant pieces of town business to track heading into the weekend.

TOWN HALL

Town Manager Scott Crabtree issued a public health advisory Thursday raising Saugus' West Nile virus risk level to moderate, urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, including using repellent and avoiding peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk.

Crabtree also announced Thursday that retired U.S. Army Colonel Connell has been hired as the town's new Veterans Service Officer, a role responsible for connecting Saugus veterans with benefits, claims assistance and other support services.

Early voting for the Sept. 1 election continues at Town Hall's Board of Registrars office through Friday, Aug. 28, with early voting hours also available at the Saugus Public Library.
