SAUGUS — The Saugus Zoning Board of Appeals approved special permits and variances for five accessory dwelling unit and addition projects while delaying a contested 198-unit Broadway apartment proposal. Operating with four members under Chairman Tom Travers, the board voted 4-0 on each matter, including ADU approvals at 32 Bennett Ave and 11 Harvard Ave, and setback variances at 34 Appleton Street, 17 Dudley Street and 6 East Side Avenue, where owner Tom McGilley agreed to shift a detached garage to a four-foot setback instead of the two feet originally proposed. Precinct 2 resident Sarah Petruzzelli told the board she opposed the Broadway "Kowloon Redevelopment" as unrestricted housing, saying "I do not support approving this project as unrestricted housing" and urging a permanent 55-and-older age restriction on the 198 proposed one-bedroom units.
That matter, along with a Chapter 40B comprehensive-permit dispute at 20 Bennett Highway still in court, was continued, the Broadway case to August 27.
